Meyrin: satellite town, village and Geneva's Right Bank

Meyrin occupies the right bank of the canton of Geneva, between the airport and the countryside that stretches towards the Pays de Gex. The municipality has a dual identity that often puzzles newcomers: an original village with its old core, and a town built from scratch at the turn of the 1960s, one of the first satellite towns in Switzerland. This guide covers what shapes life there and what that changes when you are looking to buy or sell.

Way of life

The Meyrin satellite town was conceived as a self-contained whole, with its housing, green spaces and facilities brought together within a single area. People walk a great deal, between the buildings and the planted areas. Next to it, old Meyrin keeps its village scale, with its houses and a tighter street pattern.

The municipality is also home to the Alpine Botanical Garden, municipal property since 1960, devoted to mountain flora and open to the public. Another major neighbour is CERN, the European particle physics laboratory established on its territory since 1954, whose activities extend on both sides of the border. This presence gives Meyrin an international population and an employment base that weighs on housing demand.

Access and transport

Meyrin is well connected to central Geneva. Two TPG tram lines, the 14 and 18, serve the municipality and run into the city. The Geneva-La Plaine regional rail line passes through the area, and several bus lines complete the network, including a service to ZIMEYSA station.

Proximity to the airport is an asset for people who travel often, with the downside of noise in some areas, a point to check depending on the address. ZIMEYSA, the industrial zone that extends across Meyrin and Satigny, also concentrates a significant share of employment on the Right Bank.

Schools and families

The municipality has the facilities expected for a family population: primary schools, childcare facilities, sports facilities and leisure centres spread across the different districts. The cycle d'orientation (lower secondary) and post-compulsory education are part of the cantonal school system. For a family, the useful question is less whether there is a school than the actual walking distance from the home in question, which varies from one area to another between the satellite town and the village.

Architecture and property

Meyrin's property stock reflects its history. The satellite town mainly offers apartments in multi-unit buildings, often surrounded by green spaces, with layouts designed for family living. The old village and the residential housing areas add detached houses and villas, on more conventional plots.

This diversity means that two properties in Meyrin may target very different buyers. An apartment in the satellite town and a villa in a residential district meet neither the same budgets nor the same expectations. It is a municipality where valuation work is best done street by street rather than at the scale of the whole locality.

Our presence in Meyrin

CI-Léman has followed this market for a long time. We count 12 documented sales in Meyrin since 2006, of villas as well as apartments. This continuity gives us a concrete reading of the areas, of differences in value from one address to another and of the profile of buyers who come forward depending on the type of property. This is what we bring to the table when an owner entrusts us with a valuation.
