Methodology. This report compiles public data (OCSTAT, the cantonal tax administration, the Geneva Council of State, the Municipality of Cologny, the Federal Statistical Office, the Historical Dictionary of Switzerland, edu.ge.ch, the Martin Bodmer Foundation) and price estimates from property data providers (RealAdvisor, Neho), as of June 2026. Prices per m2 are algorithmic estimates presented as a range, not official transaction values. Every figure is attributed to its source and dated. No data is extrapolated or rounded for effect.

Location and geography

Cologny sits on a hillside on the Left Bank, facing the lake and the Geneva harbour. The municipality covers 364 hectares according to OCSTAT (end of 2025 data) and reaches 431 metres above sea level, ranging between 374 and 489 metres according to the Association of Geneva Municipalities. It borders the City of Geneva, Chêne-Bougeries, Vandœuvres, Collonge-Bellerive and Choulex.

The territory combines the historic village of Cologny and several residential areas: Frontenex, Grange-Canal, La Gradelle, Ruth and Pré-Byron. Land use reflects this residential character: according to the land use statistics of the Federal Statistical Office (2004-2009 survey), on a territory of 3.67 square kilometres, built-up land accounts for nearly 78 percent, agricultural land around 18 percent and forest 4 percent. This hillside topography explains part of the local property values: orientation and lake views remain the primary price criteria in the municipality.

History

The name Cologny appears as early as 1208, in the form Colognier, according to the Historical Dictionary of Switzerland. The territory then belonged to the Chapter of Saint-Pierre in Geneva, and a jurisdictional dispute with the Count of Geneva was settled by agreement in 1366. The oldest traces of settlement, however, date back to the Neolithic, with the lakeside site of La Belotte, on the shore.

From the second century, the Romans built the road linking the Bourg-de-Four to Corsier via Fronto, today's Frontenex. Cologny's fate became permanently tied to Geneva with the Treaty of Franchises of 23 May 1538, and the Ruth area was later attached by the Treaty of Turin in 1754. The first municipal council met on 9 December 1800, and the municipality in its modern boundaries was created in 1815 and 1816, when Geneva joined the Swiss Confederation. Land exchanges with the City of Geneva further adjusted the boundaries in 1939 and 1982.

Demographics

Cologny's population reached 6'149 at the end of 2025 according to OCSTAT, with a density of 1'647 residents per square kilometre. The municipality has grown steadily over the last decade, from around 4'871 residents in 2010 to over 6'000 in 2024, an increase of some 23 percent. Economically, the municipality had 1'914 full-time equivalent jobs and 297 businesses in 2022, according to the Association of Geneva Municipalities.

Property market

Cologny sits at the top of the canton's price hierarchy. Estimates vary between providers and should be read as a range, not as a transaction value. According to RealAdvisor (June 2026), the price per m2 is estimated at CHF 17'304 for apartments and CHF 22'216 for houses. Over twelve months, the estimate is down 0.4 percent for apartments and up 1.3 percent for houses. For comparison, Neho put the average at around CHF 21'672 per m2 in April 2026.

Property typeEstimated price per m212-month change
ApartmentsCHF 17'304-0.4%
HousesCHF 22'216+1.3%

In the high-end segment, Cologny ranks among the most expensive markets in Switzerland. The scarcity of plots with a view, the quality of construction and the pressure of international demand support values over the long term. A serious valuation takes into account the floor, orientation, condition and energy class of the property, beyond municipal averages.

The per-m2 figures cited here are public algorithmic estimates (RealAdvisor, Neho). They give an order of magnitude. The value of a specific property often departs from the municipal average, upwards as well as downwards.

Housing and building stock

The building stock confirms the hillside's residential character. According to the Municipality of Cologny, in 2024 the territory had around 818 detached houses, 206 residential buildings, 31 partly commercial buildings and 19 partly residential buildings, nearly 1'100 buildings containing housing in total. The high proportion of detached houses explains the price gap between villas and apartments noted above: villas with gardens dominate, and the supply of apartments remains comparatively narrow.

Taxation and wealth profile

Municipal taxation is a distinctive feature of Cologny. The municipal tax multiplier was lowered to 25 for 2025, following a two-point reduction approved by the Geneva Council of State in March 2025. This level places Cologny among the least taxed municipalities in the canton, on a par with Genthod. The reduction was made possible by a municipal reserve of more than 50 million francs, according to the debates of the Municipal Council in December 2024.

This tax profile reflects a high wealth base. According to OCSTAT (Informations statistiques number 9, September 2025, based on 2022 tax data), Cologny belongs to the group of municipalities where the median net wealth of taxpayers exceeds 250'000 francs. As a cantonal benchmark, the same publication puts the canton's median net wealth at 33'406 francs, and the highest municipal value in Vandœuvres, at 361'003 francs.

Governance and services

The municipal executive, the Administrative Council, has three members, with the office of mayor rotating each year from 1 June to 31 May. According to the Tribune de Genève and the municipality, the mayor for 2025-2026 is Pascal Hornung. The Municipal Council, the deliberative body, has 21 seats, in line with the rules for municipalities of 5'000 to 8'000 residents.

In terms of services, the municipality has a nursing home, the Foyer Saint-Paul, on chemin Frank-Thomas, with 88 single rooms. Early childcare is provided notably by the La Louchette nursery and after-school care at the Manoir. The Centre Culturel du Manoir, a multipurpose venue since 2014, hosts exhibitions, talks and concerts, and houses a library of more than 3'000 books. The Manoir park, a pharmacy and, on the lakeshore, the port and beach of La Belotte as well as a landing stage of the Compagnie générale de navigation complete the local amenities.

Transport and access

Cologny is connected to central Geneva by several Geneva Public Transport (TPG) lines departing from Rive: lines A, E, G, as well as lines 1, 9 and 33. A seasonal beach line, the 29, runs from May to September. Since 5 May 2025, an on-demand service, TPG Flex, has served the Left Bank, including Cologny, according to the municipality. The village is a few minutes from the city centre by public transport, combining residential calm with immediate proximity to the city.

Schools and education

Public primary schooling is provided in the municipality by two schools, the École du Manoir and the Pré-Picot school, according to edu.ge.ch. The Gradelle lower secondary school (cycle d'orientation) is located in Cologny. For private education, Notre-Dame du Lac is present in the municipality, from kindergarten to secondary level.

The Geneva region also offers a wide choice of international schools, located outside Cologny: Collège du Léman in Versoix, Institut Florimont in Petit-Lancy, or La Châtaigneraie campus of the International School of Geneva in Founex, in the canton of Vaud. Their relative proximity remains an asset for international families settled on the Left Bank.

Heritage and culture

Cologny is home to cultural heritage of the first rank. The Martin Bodmer Foundation, on route Martin-Bodmer, holds the Bibliotheca Bodmeriana, founded in 1951. Its underground museum, designed by the architect Mario Botta, opened in 2003. The collection comprises more than 150'000 documents and has been listed in UNESCO's Memory of the World register since 2015, according to the foundation. The Diodati estate and the Bibliotheca Bodmeriana are also listed in the inventory of cultural property of national importance.

The Villa Diodati, on chemin de Ruth, is associated with the summer of 1816, when Lord Byron stayed there and Mary Shelley conceived Frankenstein. The Pré-Byron, a viewpoint over the lake, preserves a commemorative stone erected in 1924. The municipality also has Le Manoir, the municipal cultural venue, the 1709 temple and the town hall housed in the former Gerdil building. The Golf-Club de Cologny, in Bessinge, was founded in 1971. The headquarters of the World Economic Forum is also located in the municipality.

Local life

In the heart of the village, the Auberge du Lion d'Or, on place Pierre-Gautier, is an institution. Owned by the municipality since 1951, it combines a fine-dining restaurant and a brasserie, Le Bistro, and offers a terrace with a view of the lake. The establishment is listed in the Michelin Guide. Around the square, local shops and a village atmosphere complement the residential character of the hillside. Municipal life is also marked by several regular events: the Christmas market on place du Manoir, the 1 August celebration with a procession from the town hall and a ceremony at the Pré-Byron, and the monthly programme of the Centre Culturel du Manoir.

Outlook

What follows is assessment, not quantified data. The Cologny market remains driven by the scarcity of properties with a view, low municipal taxation and international wealth-driven demand. These structural factors point to stable values in the prime segment. The energy performance of properties, measured by the CECB class, is however playing a growing role in purchase decisions and may widen the gap between renovated properties and the rest.
