Cologny occupies the hillside of the Left Bank, overlooking the lake and the harbour, a few minutes from central Geneva. The municipality covers about 3.7 km² and has nearly 6'000 inhabitants according to cantonal statistics. It remains essentially residential, made up of villas and estates, with a few apartment buildings.

Way of life

The territory is organised around a west-facing hillside, which explains the open views over the harbour and the city from much of the municipality. The Pré Byron site, on the heights, offers one of the best-known viewpoints over Geneva.

Cologny has a municipal sports centre, and the Société Nautique de Genève has its headquarters close by, at Port-Noir, on the municipal boundary. On the cultural side, the Fondation Martin Bodmer houses a library and a museum open to the public. The municipality keeps a village character, with its town hall and local shops, while remaining directly connected to the city.

Access and transport

Proximity to the centre is one of Cologny's defining features. The Rive and Eaux-Vives districts are a few minutes away by car via the quays and the hillside roads.

Transports publics genevois (TPG) serves the municipality with several bus lines, with stops around the town hall and the main crossroads. These lines link Cologny to the Rive area and to connections with the rest of the network, including the tram. For journeys towards the lake, the link also runs through Eaux-Vives, now home to the Léman Express station.

Schools and families

The municipality has its own public primary school, under the canton's Department of Public Education. For later schooling, families fall within the area's cycle d'orientation (lower secondary) schools, according to the cantonal catchment areas.

The private and international schools of the Left Bank are a frequent criterion for families settling in Cologny. The La Grande Boissière campus, part of the International School of Geneva, is on the Left Bank, on Route de Chêne, within reasonable distance of the municipality. Other private schools in the canton complete this offering. We recommend checking catchment areas and available places directly with each school.

Architecture and property

Villas and estates on wooded grounds dominate Cologny's building stock. There are historic residences, including the Villa Diodati, known for the stay of Lord Byron and his friends in 1816, as well as more recent buildings spread across the hillside. A few apartment buildings complete the residential fabric, in limited numbers.

The market is characterised by scarcity. Building plots are few and the municipality sees few transactions each year. This low turnover, combined with sustained demand for the Left Bank and its harbour views, keeps prices high and makes each property difficult to compare. A villa with an open view or a flat plot does not recur from one sale to the next. Valuation therefore calls for a case-by-case reading.

Our presence in Cologny

We count 5 sales documented by CI-Léman in Cologny since 2006, out of the 575 we have handled in the canton. This small volume reflects the reality of the municipality, a market with little activity and high demand, where properties rarely change hands. Each of these sales required valuation work specific to the address and its characteristics.
